Maria Grazia Chiuri, the Creative Director of Dior’s women’s line, embarked on the creation of the Spring-Summer 2024 ready-to-wear collection by delving into a profound contemplation of the present. This present, she believes, demands the coexistence of both the past and the future. Within this intriguing convergence, open to diverse interpretations, she persistently explores the intricate interplay between femininity and feminism. She firmly holds the conviction that fashion, now more than ever, bears a profound responsibility to empower women, enabling them to realize their inherent worth and express their unique identities. Her focus extends to the rebels who have valiantly asserted their independence in a world dominated by masculinity and have challenged its established norms.

Among these remarkable rebels are the witches, the custodians of ancient mother-goddess knowledge, who impart the wisdom of plants and honor the natural rhythms of time. Maria Grazia Chiuri’s designs for Dior unveil a medieval aesthetic, characterized by architectural silhouettes where masculine-style jackets take center stage. Certain fabrics bear witness to a palpable materiality, preserving the essence of time and reflecting a deep understanding of the work of the Italian artist Alberto Burri. Tears, lacerations, and combustions are elevated to a constitutive, performative element of the garments. The color palette draws inspiration from hues such as ash, chamomile, and love potions. The iconic Mille-fleurs pattern synonymous with Dior is reimagined as a dark motif, offering a stark contrast to the traditional floral design. Phases of the moon, suns heralding the changing seasons, medicinal herbs, and fantastical creatures are integral components of this iconic design, frequently incorporated into the embroidery.
